Hot Shooting Randolph-Macon Wins Rees Jewelers Christmas Classic with a 94-70 Victory Over Elms
ASHLAND, VA – Fueled by 27 points from David Carlson and a 19 point, 12 rebound, double-double from tournament most outstanding player Jeremy Dixon, the Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team topped Elms College 94-70 Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the 2007 Rees Jewelers Christmas Classic hosted by R-MC.
R-MC (7-2), which has now won five games in a row, also got 14 points from all-tournament team member Jordan Brown and 13 points and eight assists from point guard Justin Short. R-MC made 36-of-58 (62.1%) shots on the afternoon, including seven three-pointers. The Jackets won the rebounding battle 41-36 over the Blazers as well.
Elms (8-2) was paced by all-tournament selection Juan Galdon who had 19 points and Juan Alverio who had 17 in a losing effort. The Blazers made 24-of-67 (35.8%) shots on the afternoon and were 6-of-23 from behind the arc and 16-of-30 from the charity stripe.
Carlson, who was also an all-tournament team selection, tallied 20 of his points in the first-half, knocking down all six of his shots, including three shots from behind the arc. R-MC also made 18-of-28 baskets in the first 20 minutes to stake claim to a 50-35 lead at the break.
In the second-half, R-MC built on its lead early and extended it to 25 when Brown converted a lay up to make the score 62-37 with 15 minutes left in the game as the Jackets went on to the victory.
R-MC will be back in action on January 9th when it resumes ODAC play with a 7:00 p.m. home tilt against Lynchburg College in Crenshaw Gymnasium.
