HARRISONBURG, VA – The Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team ran its winning streak to five games Wednesday evening with a 72-64 ODAC road win at Bridgewater College.
R-MC (18-4 / 12-3 ODAC) got off to a hot start and took a 22-9 lead with 8:40 left in the first half when Jordan Brown made a layup, but Bridgewater (12-9 / 6-8 ODAC) rallied and cut the R-MC lead to 28-27 at the break.
The Yellow Jackets put together a 14-1 run in the second half to lead by 16 points, 63-47, with 6:09 left in the game. Bridgewater then answered with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to five, 63-58, with 3:46 left.
A layup by Randolph-Macon’s Danny Jones momentarily stopped the BC run, but the Eagles continued to chip away at the lead and scored six straight points cut the deficit to one at 65-64.
Justin Short then hit the biggest shot of the game when the Yellow Jacket point guard buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to push the lead to four. After BC’s Michael Oblitey missed a three-pointer at the other end, Boris Varela scored on a layup to clinch the victory for the Yellow Jackets.
Short and Brown scored 16 points each to lead the Yellow Jackets. Jones scored 11 and Jeremy Dixon added 10 for the winners. Varela pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Jackets to a 36-25 advantage on the boards.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Saturday evening at home when it welcomes No. 23 Virginia Wesleyan to Ashland for a 7:00 p.m. ODAC contest.
