Swarthmore Tops R-MC Field Hockey 3-1
SWARTHMORE, Pa.- The Swarthmore field hockey team (4-1) beat visiting Randolph-Macon (2-4) on a sunny Sunday fall afternoon at Clothier Field by the score of 3-1.
Natalie Stone scored the first Garnet goal of the afternoon off a cross from senior defender Rachel Turner. It was Stone's team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Swarthmore senior forward Abbie Fischer scored the second Garnet goal at the 16:55 mark, taking a long cross from midfielder Devon Novotnak.
The second half started with the Garnet leading 2-0 and 15 minutes in freshman forward Sara McCabe drilled in a broken penalty corner.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board late in the second half-forward Lindsay Walker squeezed a shot past Garnet netminder Gina Grubb at 63:02. The goal was assisted from forward Jill Dixon who gave a short pass off to Walker in front of the goal.
Anna Baeth led the Garnet defense with a number of clears during the Yellow Jacket penalty corners. Playing for 59:10, Swarthmore freshman goalie Katie Ashmore had three saves. Relieving Ashmore in the second half, Grubb posted two of her own saves.
Sophomore Ashley Crouch posted 10 saves in goal for Randolph-Macon.
