Big Second Half Sends No. 23 Randolph-Macon Past Mt. Aloysius 78-46
CRESSON, PA – Randolph-Macon’s Lindsey Riesbeck scored a game-high 18 points and Jess Shifflett added a career high 17 points as the 23rd ranked Yellow Jackets opened up their 2007-08 season with a 78-46 victory over Mt. Aloysius Saturday night in the opening round of the Mounties’ Coaches vs. Cancer Tip Off Tournament in Cresson, Pennsylvania.
R-MC also got double-digit performances from Amanda Hiltunen who had 15 points and Nicole Childress who had 12 points off the bench for the Jackets. R-MC shot just 38.5% from the floor but connected on 33-of-42 attempts from the foul line including Childress who converted all 10 of her opportunities.
Riesbeck also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and posted four blocks in the win while Shifflett chipped in with six boards of her own. The R-MC defense held the Mounties to just 25.4% shooting from the floor, allowing MAC to make just 16-of-63 shot attempts on the night, including just five field goals in the second-half.
R-MC held a 31-28 advantage at the intermission and would out score the Mounties 47-18 in the second half to secure the win. The Jackets used a 15-1 run to start the second 20 minutes of play, opening up a 46-30 lead with 14:51 left in the game.
After Mt. Aloysius’ Liz Heubel made one of two free-throws to cut the R-MC advantage to 48-33 with 13:15 left, R-MC out scored the Mounties 21-8 over the next nine minutes and took a 28 point lead when Childress made two free-throws with 4:44 remaining.
The Mounties were led by Emily McKenna who had a team high nine points while Brianna Baker and Lindsey Bush each had six points in a losing effort.
R-MC will face Vassar College (N.Y.) in the championship game of the tournament Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
