Hot Shooting Randolph-Macon Upends Christopher Newport 79-63
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team used four players in double figures and 56% shooting from the floor to knock off regional rival Christopher Newport University 79-63 in Ashland on Wednesday night.
R-MC (3-2) was led by Justin Short who had 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including four three pointers. Jeremy Dixon had 18 points while Jordan Brown and David Carlson had 13 and 11 points, respectively on the night. Boris Varela grabbed a game-high six rebounds in the win. The Jackets made 32-of-57 shots on the night, including 10 three pointers. R-MC won the battle on the glass, out rebounding CNU 37-26 on the night.
The Captains (0-5) were led by Conley Taylor who had a team-high 19 points while Theo Baker had 10 points on the evening. CNU shot 36.2% on 21-of-58 shooting, including 8-of-19 from beyond the arc.
After a pair of free-throws by Taylor cut an early R-MC advantage to 35-31, a free-throw by R-MC’s Danny Jones on the next possession made the score 36-31 in favor of the Yellow Jackets with 1:51 left in the half. Short then scored nine of the next 12 points in the game to send R-MC to the locker room at the intermission up 45-34.
Randolph-Macon came out in the second-half and extended its lead to 19 at 62-43 when Short connected on a three-pointer with 12:52 left in the game. The Jackets lead would reach as much as 23 when a Dixon bucket made the score 79-56 with 3:18 left in the contest.
Randolph-Macon will be off until December 16th and 17th when it will host the Briggs Elliott Classic. The Yellow Jackets will face Arcadia on the 16th at 2:00 p.m. with the consolation or championship against either Muhlenberg or NC Wesleyan at 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. on the 17th.
