R-MC Baseball Takes a Pair from St. Mary’s 7-6 and 4-3 on Saturday
(Game One Box Score) / (Game Two Box Score)
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College baseball team earned a pair of one run victories on Saturday to take a non-conference doubleheader from St. Mary’s of Maryland, 7-6 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
Down 5-0 in game one, R-MC rallied with three runs in the sixth inning of a scheduled seven inning game. The inning was highlighted by a towering two run homerun off the bat of Charlie Hartt that made the score 5-3 in favor of the Seahawks.
After SMC tacked on what looked to be an insurance run in the seventh to make the score 6-3, R-MC again rallied, loading the bases with one out and then got back-to-back singles from Mike Wallace and JC Conway to cut the SMC lead to 6-5. Jeff Beck followed Conway with an RBI single that plated both Wallace and pinch runner Steve Craun to give the Jackets the victory.
Mike Gerdes (1-0) threw one inning of relief to pick up the win, while Caleb Simms (0-1) gave up eight hits and four runs in one inning of work in taking the loss.
In game two, R-MC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning before SMC chipped away and eventually tied the game in the seventh inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Conway delivered an RBI single that scored Craun and gave R-MC the doubleheader sweep.
Dillion Sheads (1-0) picked up the win for R-MC in relief, allowing one run on one hit in two innings of work. Mikel Iraola (0-1) took the loss for the Seahawks, tossing 4.1 innings of relief, surrendering four hits and one run.
Randolph-Macon and the St. Mary’s will conclude their series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Ashland.
