R-MC Baseball Sweeps Rowan 9-8 and 12-4
(Game One Box Score) / (Game Two Box Score)
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College baseball team swept a pair of games from Rowan University (N.J.) on Sunday afternoon in Ashland, winning game one 9-8 and the second contest 12-4. R-MC now stands at 4-6, while RU drops to 1-2.
In game one, R-MC found itself trailing 7-5 heading into its last at bat of the scheduled seven inning game. Chris Dykes led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a long fly ball out by Greg Meleski. Charlie Hartt then followed Meleski with a two run homerun to tie the ball game at 7-7.
RU took back the lead in the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk that made the score 8-7. In the Jackets half of the eighth, Ryan Dickerson opened the frame with a single and was followed by James Bierlein who drew a walk.
Kevin Davis then sacrificed the runners over to second and third and Dickerson would come home on a wild pitch to tie the game. Dykes followed and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Steve Craun who was running for Bierlein.
Nick Simons (1-0) picked up the win for the Jackets, getting two key outs with the bases loaded in the Rowan eighth.
In game two, Byron Mendenhall picked up his first collegiate win, allowing four runs over five innings of work and striking out seven. Kyle Hicks followed Mendenhall and allowed just two hits over three innings of work, while Dillon Sheads closed out the game in the ninth inning.
R-MC took a 2-0 lead early, getting an RBI triple from Meleski and an RBI single from Hartt to stake an early advantage.
The game stayed that way until the top of the third inning when the Profs struck for three runs to take a 3-2 edge, but R-MC took the lead right back in its next at bat when Jay Lichter connected for a two-out grand slam that put the Yellow Jackets on top for good 6-3.
The Jackets extended their lead to 7-3 with a single run in the fourth and then scored four runs in the fifth inning to go up 11-3 and put the game away.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Thursday when it takes on regional rival Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia at 3:00 p.m.
