R-MC Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with SUNY-New Paltz

ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon Baseball team split an out of league doubleheader with SUNY-New Paltz on Saturday, losing game one by the score of 8-6 and winning game two 19-4.
In game one, Kevin Paino went 3-4 with a homerun, two doubles and 4 RBI’s to lead SUNY New Paltz to a season opening victory 8-6 win over R-MC. Paino started the fireworks off in the first inning with a two-out, three-run homerun to put the Hawks up 4-0.
The Hawks plated a single run in the second, third and fourth inning, holding a 7-3 lead after four complete. Four additional Hawks had two hit performances, including Alex Cadmus who was 2-3 with 3 RBI’s and a run scored.
Jay Lichter led the Yellow Jackets offensive charge, going 2-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Five other Yellow Jackets collected single hits on the day.
Starter Kurt Breitmeyer was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits through two innings of work. Zachary Potter went the distance for the Hawks, scattering seven hits while striking out seven, for his win of the season.
Randolph-Macon College exploded for six runs over the first two innings and never looked back, upending the Hawks 19-4 in the second game of the Saturday’s twin bill between the two clubs.
The Yellow Jackets batted around in both the fourth and fifth innings, plating five runs in the fourth and eight more in the fifth before the game was called in the sixth in due to darkness.
Greg Meleski was one of many offensive stars for R-MC; going 3-3 with a triple, two doubles, three runs scored and 4 RBI’s over his four plate appearances. Sophomore Michael Wallace also had a three hit game for the Jackets, while freshman Greg Mitro contributed two hits and junior Charlie Hartt had a homerun and four RBI’s. Freshman Devin Scalabrini led the Hawks with two hits in three plate appearances.
Byron Mendenhall (2-0) got the win for R-MC, while Jonathan Shanks was tagged with the loss.
Randolph- Macon is off until Wednesday, when they host perennial power Ferrum College for a 2:30pm start. New Paltz will continue their southern swing with a doubleheader at Mary Washington Sunday afternoon.
