DEMOREST, GA – Piedmont College jumped out to an early five run lead and was able to withstand a late Randolph-Macon College rally to win 8-7 in the 2008 season opener for both teams.
The Lions (1-0) got four runs in the first inning, three of which came courtesy of a Matt Devito homerun. PC added to its lead in the third inning when a lead off homerun from Travis Hunt made the score 5-0 in favor of the Lions.
R-MC (0-1) struck for its first runs of the season in the fourth inning when Charlie Hartt opened the frame with a double and came around to score on a double by Jeff Beck. Beck then came home to score, making the score 5-2 when JC Conway followed with an RBI single.
The Lions tacked on a single run in the home-half of the fourth before the Jackets tied the game at 6-6 with a four run fifth inning on five hits which included RBI singles from Hartt, Conway and Bruno Gora, while Beck delivered an RBI double.
Piedmont responded an inning and a half later with a solo run on a Justin Oates sacrifice fly scoring Justin Vorherr.
The Jackets then tied the game once again when Kevin Davis opened the eighth inning with a single. Davis then moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a ground out by Chris Dykes. Mike Wallace followed Dykes with an RBI single to knot the game at 7-7.
The Lions scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the eighth when they loaded the bases after Andy House singled to open the inning then moved to second on an error. After the next two batters were hit by pitches, John Duke drew a walk to push across the deciding run.
Tom Dimitroff picked up the win for Piedmont after throwing two innings of relief for the Lions. R-MC’s Josh Ellwood was handed the loss after being charged with House’s run in the eighth inning.
Offensively, Hartt finished the day with three hits and an RBI for the Jackets, while Beck and Conway each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs in the loss.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when it takes on Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C.
