DANVILLE, VA -- Second-seeded Johns Hopkins University out lasted Randolph-Macon College 13-8 in a see-saw elimination game in the 2008 NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional.
R-MC finishes the season with a school record 25 wins. The Jackets captured the school’s first ODAC Championship since 1987 and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1977. JHU, which is ranked fifth in the nation, improves to 35-6 on the season.
After scoring a run in its first at bat on an RBI double from Charlie Hartt to score Adam Carpenter, R-MC found itself down by six after JHU scored seven unanswered runs over the next three innings to go up 7-1 after three and a half innings.
In the Jackets fourth, they pushed a run across on sacrifice fly by Jeff Beck that plated Hartt to cut the Blue Jay advantage to 7-2.
The game stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when R-MC exploded for five runs to tie the ball game at 7-7. The big hits off inning came with two outs when Greg Meleski drove in two runs with a single. Two batters later, Mike Wallace doubled with the bases loaded to score a pair.
The lead was short lived as JHU retook the lead in the top-half of the seventh when John Solomon walked with one out and came around to score on an RBI double from Tony Margve to make the score 8-7. The Blue Jays tacked on three more runs in the inning to pull ahead 11-7.
The Yellow Jackets cut the Johns Hopkins lead to 11-8 in the bottom half of the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single by Bruno Gora to score Jay Lichter.
That would be as close as R-MC would get as Brian Youchak capped a four hit day with a two-run homerun in the ninth to make the score 13-8.
