No. 4 Salisbury Tops R-MC Baseball 7-4 in NCAA Baseball Action

DANVILLE, VA – Top-seeded Salisbury University topped Randolph-Macon College 7-4 in the first day of the NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional on Wednesday afternoon.
With SU (39-2) leading 1-0 in the third inning, the Sea Gulls doubled their lead on a RBI double by Mike Celenza. Celenza would then score to make the score 3-0 when Jordan Crystal hit into a double play.
R-MC (25-16) responded in the next half inning, loading the bases and then cracking the scoreboard when Charlie Hartt delivered an RBI single to score Jay Lichter. Willey got out further trouble when he was able to get Mike Wallace to ground into a fielder’s choice.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth when SU scored four runs to go out in front 7-1.
The Jackets rallied with two outs in the eighth when Wallace doubled home Greg Meleski and Hartt. JC Conway followed with an RBI single to bring home Wallace to make the score 7-4.
Byron Mendenhall went 5.1 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, while walking a pair and striking out three. The loss is the first for the ODAC Pitcher of the Year who now stands at 7-1 on the season.
Willey improves to 11-0 on the season. He went 7.2 innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits, walking five and punching out five.
Trailing, 7-4, in the ninth, RMC had the game tying run at the plate. Adam Carpenter (3-6) doubled off the centerfield wall. On the play, Lichter (4-4) was the thrown out at the plate, and then Kevin Davis was tagged out at third for the double play. Greg Meleski then grounded out to end the game and earn reliever Ryan Bennick his second save of the year.
R-MC, which stranded 17 runners in the game and out-hit SU, 15-13, will play at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game on Thursday at Dan Daniel Park in Danville, Virginia.
