Yellow Jackets Open ODAC Schedule with Doubleheader Sweep of Hampden-Sydney
(Game One Box Score) / (Game Two Box Score)
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College baseball team kicked off its 2008 ODAC slate of games with a doubleheader sweep of archrival Hampden-Sydney on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets won today’s first contest 5-4 in extra innings and took the nightcap 5-3.
R-MC, which has now won six of its last seven games to improve to 8-7 on the season, got a walk off single from Mike Wallace in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Jackets to the victory.
In that decisive inning, Bruno Gora singled with one out. After H-SC reliever Breedlove retired Greg Meleski, Gora stole second and moved to third when the throw went into the outfield. Charlie Hartt walked and was followed by Wallace who delivered the game-winning hit.
Hartt started on the mound for R-MC, going six innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out three. After H-SC rallied off Josh Ellwood to tie the game, Dillon Sheads entered the game and went two innings and allowed two hits to earn his first victory of the season.
In game two, Gora was 3-for-4 with a two run homerun and two runs scored and starter Byron Mendenhall (3-0) allowed just one run over five innings of work to lead R-MC to a 5-3 victory.
The Jackets struck for a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Meleski delivered a two out RBI single that scored JC Conway and Ryan Dickerson. Hartt followed with an RBI single to plate Gora and put R-MC up by three early.
Gora extended the Randolph-Macon lead to 5-1 in the fifth with his first homerun of the year that also scored Kevin Davis who had singled with one out in the inning.
H-SC (6-12 / 1-4 ODAC) rallied to make the score 5-3 in the eighth and then put two runners on in the ninth, but Sheads got the last out of the game to record the save and give R-MC the sweep.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Thursday when it welcomes Averett University to Ashland for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game.
