ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College baseball team scored 10 runs in its final two at bats to rally for an 11-3 victory over visiting Ferrum College on Wednesday afternoon in Ashland.
R-MC (6-7) found itself down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, where they scored a single run to cut the Panther advantage to 3-1.
In the home half of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with one out before Mike Wallace plated Kevin Davis to make the score 3-2.
FC (4-2) reliever Peter Larson had appeared to get the next batter Jay Lichter to hit into an inning double play, but instead, the ball was mishandled and Bruno Gora and Charlie Hartt scored to give R-MC a 4-3 lead. A JC Conway sacrifice fly two batters later scored Wallace to put the Jackets on top 5-3.
In a sixth run eighth inning, Gora doubled with one out and was followed by Greg Meleski who doubled to extend the R-MC advantage to 6-3. After Hartt was hit by a pitch, Wallace delivered a two RBI double and he would come around to score on an RBI single by Jeff Beck. Conway closed out the scoring with a two run homerun to give the Yellow Jackets an 11-3 lead.
Josh Ellwood (1-1) picked up is first collegiate win after throwing two innings of perfect relief, while striking out two. R-MC starter Matt Tiller kept the Jackets in the game early, throwing six innings, scattering five hits and three runs and punching out five.
Larson (0-1) took the loss for Ferrum, surrendering four runs on two hits, while walking two in a third of an inning of work.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when it takes on ODAC rival Hampden-Sydney at 12:00 p.m. in a doubleheader.
