Wallace Powers Randolph-Macon to Doubleheader Sweep of Bridgewater

ASHLAND, VA – Sophomore Mike Wallace’s go-ahead grand slam, capped off a ninth inning rally by Randolph-Macon and sent the Yellow Jackets to a 10-5, game two win and a sweep of Saturday’s ODAC doubleheader at Bridgewater College. R-MC took game one 4-3 behind a complete game effort by right-hander Charlie Hartt.
With the wins, R-MC improves to 15-10 overall and 8-2 in the ODAC, while defending champion Bridgewater drops to 5-5 in the league and 13-10-1 overall.
Trailing 5-4 heading into the top half of the ninth in game two, Kevin Davis bunted his way on with one out and moved to second on a single by Adam Carpenter. Greg Meleski then tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI double scoring Davis. BC intentionally walked Hartt to get to Wallace who put R-MC up 9-5 with his third homerun of the season.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on an insurance run later in the inning when David Jayne plated JC Conway with an RBI single.
Dillon Sheads retired the Eagles in the home half of the ninth to secure the win for Nick Simons who improved his record to 2-0 after tossing one third of an inning, striking out the only batter he faced and stranding a runner on third after BC had rallied to take the lead in the eighth.
In game one, Hartt went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out three to improve his record to 2-3 on the season.
Hartt helped his own cause in the first game, going 2-for-4 at the plate on the day, including an RBI single in the first inning that scored Bruno Gora and put R-MC 1-0.
With the score 2-1 in favor of the Jackets in the fourth inning, BC took the lead when a Aaron Read delivered an RBI double that scored Drew Elkins and Michael Lenox.
Wallace responded for Randolph-Macon in the fifth with a two-run homerun that scored also scored Gora to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good. For the day, Wallace was 4-for-9 with six RBI and three runs scored.
Randolph-Macon will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts nearby rival Mary Washington at 4:00 p.m.
