ASHLAND, VA .—The Randolph-Macon College baseball team picked up its fifth straight win on Thursday, topping visiting Averett University 4-3 behind a strong start from right-hander Matt Tiller and a key homerun off the bat of JC Conway.
Tiller (1-1) scattered six hits over seven innings, allowed just two runs and struck out one to pick up his first win of the season.
R-MC (9-7) was held hitless by AU starter Jacob Waller through the first three innings. In the top half of the fourth with the Cougars leading 2-0, Charlie Hartt drew a two out walk and then moved to third on a double by Mike Wallace. Jeff Beck followed with a double that plated both runners to tie the game. Conway then singled home Beck to push the Jackets ahead 3-2.
Conway then provided what proved to be the game-winning hit with a solo homerun to lead off the sixth inning that made the score 4-2 in favor of Randolph-Macon.
AU rallied in its half of the eighth inning when Eric Sibrizzi opened the frame with a double off R-MC reliever Mike Gerdes and scored when Jake Loye followed with a single that made the score 4-3.
After Gerdes retired the next batter, Kyle Hicks entered the game on the mound for the Jackets and was able to strand two runners to hold the lead in the eighth and retired the side in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Salem, Virginia to take on Roanoke College in a 1:00 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
