The stage is set for a holiday tradition at Randolph-Macon College.
Ebenezer Scrooge will kick off the twentieth production of R-MC communication studies professor Marilyn Mattys’ adaptation of
A Christmas Carol, directed by Joe Mattys, drama professor and director of the R-MC Arts Department.
This production, now in it's 20th year, runs for seven straight days beginning Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m.; Dec. 5 – 6, 2 p.m.; Dec.7 – 10, 7:30 p.m. As in years past, cider and cookies will be served in the lobby after the show, where the audience can meet and greet the cast.

“The first performance, in 1990, was staged in Old Chapel. The set was simply black flats and floors with simple costumes. We only had a small troop of actors who played numerous parts,” comments Joe Mattys. “Since then, the script has evolved slightly, adding characters here and there and simplifying others and the sets and costumes have become more beautifully designed. Yet, the story remains faithful and maintains the spirit and tone of the original,” he says.
A Christmas Carol is not only a tradition at R-MC, but for local families who make this an annual holiday gathering. Many of the cast members, including residents from the Town of Ashland, have grown up acting in different roles of the annual production. Returning for the twentieth production is ten-year veteran and Randolph-Macon alumnus Matt Hackman ’02 playing the title role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Hackman is thoroughly excited to reprise his role, saying, “I am excited about this year and it will certainly be different and better than in the past.” Joining Hackman in his return is four-year runner Bitsy Johnson ’09, who has played a variety of roles. “The experience is incredible. It is awesome to be a part of such a long-running tradition,” she says.
