Randolph-Macon College Announces September Cultural & Entertainment Series for the Public
Ashland, VA - Randolph-Macon College announces its 2007-2008 Cultural Arts and Entertainment Series. Each year Randolph-Macon College brings first-class cultural arts events to campus and this year’s lineup is a standout. Events include music, drama and comedic presentations, films, art exhibits, and lectures. Many of the events are free and all are open to the public.
EVENT DATES:
September 8: The series kicks off on September 8th with Jared Campbell, a 23 year-old singer-songwriter from Binghamton, NY, who has developed himself as a fixture in the independent music scene. With influences such as Gavin DeGraw and John Mayer, Campbell’s thought-provoking lyrics and melodic vocals appeal to many demographics, allowing him in the past two years to build a loyal fan base and sell more than 16,000 CD’s to date. This free concert will begin at 10 p.m. at the Frank E. Brown Campus Center, 304 Henry Street.
September 16 – November 16: The opening reception for the season’s first art exhibit, Everything but the Kitchen Sink, is scheduled for Sunday, September 16, 3-5 p.m. at the Flippo Gallery, Pace-Armistead Hall, 211 N. Center Street. The reception is free and open to the public. This unique and vibrant show features the work of twenty-one women artist from Virginia, New York, New Mexico, and California. Works in the exhibit range from folk art to installations including everything in between. The gallery is open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekends by appointment. Please note the gallery will be closed Oct. 12- Oct. 16 for the college’s fall break. The gallery also will be open in conjunction with symphony, theatre and choral performances.
September 18: The September schedule continues with Solazo, a four-member band hailing from Chili, Argentina, and Ecuador. They will be making their sixth U.S. appearance on
September 18 at 6 p.m. in the Frank E. Brown Campus Center, 304 Henry Street. Their unique blend of Latin, folk, contemporary dance music and soulful ballads appeals to all ages and cultures.
September 23: Faced with the enormous challenge of providing clean, secure, and sustainable energy, many argue that the United States and other developed countries should be pursuing other energy options more aggressively. Virginia Senator Frank W. Wagner will present a lecture entitled Development and Use of Renewable Energy at 7 p.m. in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Senator Wagner, elected to the Virginia Senate in 2000, will examine the country’s current use and development of renewable energy sources, such as solar, geothermal and wind energies. He will also share the latest details surrounding alternative energy options. This timely event is co-sponsored by the R-MC Environmental Studies Department and Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, and is part of the church’s “Hot Topics” series.
September 26-29: The first drama presentation is the play Wildest Dreams by Alan Ayckbourn and directed by R-MC junior, James Murray. This “be careful what you wish for” comedy is set in a small town outside of London, a group of misfit friends project their dreams and aspirations onto figures in a board game. The board game characters slowly become their view of perfection, but not without dire (yet sometimes humorous) consequences. The run of the play is September 26-28, beginning at 8 p.m. and September 29 beginning at 2 p.m. in the Cobb Theater, R-MC Center for the Performing Arts, 205 Henry Street. Admission is $5. September 29: The Boston four-man comedy group, Late Night Players, will perform September, 29 at 8 p.m. in the Blackwell Auditorium, R-MC Center for the Performing Arts, 205 Henry Street. This group regularly tours the collegiate entertainment circuit, already having performed at more than 200 colleges across the United States. They tackle life using a number of tools, ranging from “Saturday Night Live”-like sketches to musical numbers and dance offs.
Highlights from the 07-08 season also include the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, The Captain Lazerblast Band, and a presentation of The Crucible by Arthur Miller.
