Randolph-Macon College Announces its Hall of Fame Class of 2008
ASHLAND, VA -- Randolph-Macon College announced Thursday the addition of four former stand out student-athletes and one very special team to the college’s athletic Hall of Fame. Former athletes Tim Armoska, David Bristow, David Kagey, Jen Kohler Del Rossi, and the 1976-77 R-MC Men’s Basketball Team will be honored on Saturday, February 23rd in an induction ceremony to be held on campus in Ashland.
The Randolph-Macon College Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1996 to honor and memorialize those individuals who, by outstanding achievement in athletics or service to the college's sports teams, have made lasting contributions to the cause of sports at the college. The Hall of Fame may also honor former athletes who have made outstanding contributions to society in general. This year’s four new members will bring the total number of individual inductees to 58. The 1976-77 men’s hoops team will join the 1969 football team which was inducted as a whole in 2004, as the only two teams to be inducted.
Tim Armoska ‘97
A native of Richmond and a graduate of Monacan High School, Armoska came to R-MC as a transfer in 1994 and in his three years with the Yellow Jackets compiled school record 426 tackles, including a single season best 170 during his senior campaign.
For his efforts, Armoska was a three-time First-Team Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection and the league’s Player-of-the-Year in 1996. He was also a three-time All-South Region and All-State selection. Armoska was selected as a Second-Team Little All-American in 1995 and a first-team pick in 1996.
After his graduation, Armoska played three seasons with the Richmond Speed of the Arena Football league. An employee of Mohawk Industries upon his graduation, Armoska and his wife Diane moved to California in 2003 and Armoska was promoted to District Sales Manager.
In 2004, Armoska unexpectedly passed away of a brain aneurysm while living in Walnut Creek, California near Oakland.
David Bristow ‘78
David Bristow was a four-year letter winner on the baseball diamond for R-MC and a team captain in 1978 for the Yellow Jackets. During his time in Ashland, Bristow was a two-time First-Team Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection following his junior and senior seniors. In 1978, Bristow earned all league honors, was an All South Region selection and R-MC’s George P. Compton Award Winner.
Bristow ranks among the best in many of Randolph-Macon baseball career rankings including batting average (.353 / 7th), hits (114 / 6th), homeruns (13 / 4th), RBIs (100 / 3rd), total bases (194 / 4th) and extra-base hits (41 / 5th).
A standout on the pitching rubber as well, Bristow ranks ninth all-time with 13 career victories, third with 13 complete games and eighth all-time with 118 strike outs.
Bristow also holds both pitching and hitting single season records as well. In 1976 he won all seven of his decisions which ranks sixth all-time and is tied for first with a 1.000 win-percentage for the season. That same year, Bristow posted a 1.13 ERA which ranks fourth best for a season and his seven complete games ranks third. On the offensive side, Bristow hit eight home runs in 1977 which ranks third all-time for a single season while his 33 RBI in 1978 places him 10th on the single season list.
Since his graduation from R-MC in 1978, Bristow has gone on to successful careers with Crown Oil from 1980-87 and Dominion Resources from 1988-2005. Bristow continues to be a supporter of Randolph-Macon Athletics as a member of the Yellow Jacket Club.
David Kagey ‘91
David Kagey is originally from Charlottesville, Virginia and came to Randolph-Macon in 1987 and was a standout on the basketball court and the classroom, graduating from R-MC with a degree in biology in 1994.
Under the tutelage head coach Hal Nunnally, Kagey finished his four-year career with 1,478 points which currently ranks 12th all-time on the Yellow Jackets career scoring list. Kagey also ranks fifth in career steals (142) and sixth in career assists (359). At the time of his graduation, Kagey stood 10th all-time with a career shooting percentage of 53.4.
A two-time First-Team All Old Dominion Athletic Conference selection, Kagey capped off his stellar career by being named the 1990-91 ODAC Player of the Year and a First-Team National Association of Basketball Coach (NABC) All-American selection.
The Yellow Jackets compiled an 89-24 record during Kagey’s time in Ashland. R-MC also won ODAC Tournament titles in 1989-1990 and 1990-1991. R-MC also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of those seasons. Kagey and his teammates also finished the season with a national ranking on three occasions.
Upon his graduation in 1991, Kagey earned his Masters of Science from the Medical College of Virginia in 1996 and his doctorate in 1998. From 1999-2003, Kagey completed his residency in urology at the University of Kentucky.
Kagey now resides in Roanoke, Virginia and runs his own urology practice at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Kagey is a member of the American Urologic Association and holds a host of Licensures and Certification in the world of medicine.
Kagey is married to former Wendy Eller who graduated from R-MC in 1991. The couple has one daughter, Emily Elizabeth.
Jen Kohler Del Rossi ‘96
A native of West Chester, Pa., Kohler graduated from Randolph-Macon with a degree in biology and was a two-sport standout in soccer and basketball during her time in Ashland.
On the pitch, Kohler closed out her outstanding four-year career as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference career leader in total points with 196 and assists with 58. Kohler’s 69 career goals are good for fourth on the league’s all-time list.
As a freshman, Kohler was named a Second-Team All-American as well as a First-Team All-ODAC selection and All-State pick after setting the league’s single season assist record (19) and leading the Jackets to a 16-2-0 record and an ODAC championship.
After earning First-Team All-ODAC honors, All Region accolades and helped R-MC to back-to-back ODAC championships as a sophomore in 1993, Kohler was named was named the ODAC Player-of-the-Year and a First-Team All-American in leading the 1994 Yellow Jacket squad to its third straight league championship.
Kohler closed out her career in 1995 with a First-Team All-ODAC selection, an All-South Region selection and led R-MC to a 19-1-2 record and its fourth straight ODAC championship. Kohler was also chosen as one of the recipients of a prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship.
During her four seasons, Kohler and her teammates racked up a 66-5-6 overall record and a perfect 44-0 mark against ODAC competition.
On the basketball court, Kohler was four-year letter winner and a four-time All-ODAC honoree including three first-team selections. A member of R-MC’s 1,000-point club, Kohler was honored as the league’s rookie-of-the-year following the 1992-93 season and the ODAC Player-of-the-Year following her senior season in 1995-96.
Kohler finished her career averaging 15.8 points each time out on the floor. As a freshman, she averaged 15.2 ppg finishing third in the league. She was third in the league in scoring (17.5) as a sophomore and seventh as a junior with a 14.6 average each time out.
As a senior, she was ranked in the top-six in the ODAC in scoring (15.7), rebounds (4.1) and free-throw percentage (76.0%) earning player-of-the-year honors and leading the Jackets to a 28-2 overall record and the school’s first ODAC Championship.
That same season, Kohler was winner of the ODAC’s Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year, a Kodak All-American and R-MC’s winner of the Susan Locke deNagy Award which is given to the College’s outstanding female athlete.
1976-77 Men’s Basketball Team
Under the leadership of head coach Hal Nunnally, this team comprised of 15 student-athletes went 23-8 overall and were runners up at the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament held in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The last team selected into the tournament, the Yellow Jackets topped Youngstown State, Eastern Illinois, Cheyney State and North Alabama en route to the championship game.
Nunnally was joined by Eddie Webb and Richard Hoffmann on the coaching staff. The team consisted of Paul Bunting, Gary Miller, Kevin Wood, Mike Pandak, John Phillips, Benny McKaig, Bruce Tyburski, Mike Williford, David Balch, Lew Welge, Danny Connor, Reed O’Brien, Steve Skabla, Mark Bosher and Joe Allen.
