Randolph-Macon College’s Franklin Debating Society will host the Annual Wash-Frank Cup Collegiate Debates April 9, 2014. These debates, which replicate what intercollegiate debating was like in the 19th Century, have been held annually on the R-MC campus since 2001.
The debates, in which the audience is encouraged to speak up, combine the substance of public policy debate with the oratorical flair of parliamentary-style debate.
This event, which is sponsored by the Williams Mullen law firm, brings four colleges together for a series of audience-friendly debates on an interesting topic. This year's topic is: "Be It Resolved That the United States and its allies should respond more strongly to Russian expansionism." R-MC will compete against University of Mary Washington, U.S. Naval Academy, and Wake Forest University.
The debates will take place at 4:15, 5:30, and 7:30 p.m. in Washington-Franklin Hall (102 College Avenue). Map and Directions
All debates are free and open to the public. The Franklin Debating Society will be defending the Wash-Frank Cup title, which it won in 2013.
Professor Ted Sheckels coaches the R-MC Franklin Debating Society students. Sheckels is a communication studies and English professor and the director of Speaking Across the Curriculum for the Higgins Academic Center. He is assisted by part-time communication studies instructor John Mingus.
