Sue Schick '84
Randolph-Macon College alumna Susan “Sue” Draney Schick '84 was
presented the Society of Alumni Distinguished Alumna Award on March 6, 2014. The
award was given during a Macon Connections Professional Networking Event held at
The Country Club of Virginia. Schick, the invited speaker for the event, was presented
the award by Dee Raubenstine ’80, chair of the Awards Committee of the SOA.
Schick graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in
economics/business from Randolph-Macon College in 1984. She was valedictorian
of her class and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
She is the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Schick joined UnitedHealthcare
in 2003 and held various leadership positions in the mid-Atlantic region before
being named the health plan CEO in 2009. She is a regular speaker and blogger on
the topics of health care reform, business leadership and philanthropy.
Throughout the years, Schick has been lauded for her many achievements. In 2004
she received the Society of Alumni Distinguished Service Award from R-MC. In 2011
she was presented the Circle of Excellence Award by SmartCEO Magazine,
which honors Philadelphia business leaders for their philanthropic efforts. She
was also awarded a Brava! Business Women Achievement Award. In 2013 she received
the B.J. Seymour Alumna Award from
R-MC, which honors alumnae who demonstrate vitality, integrity and leadership. That
same year, she received the Gold Leaf Celebration’s Helena Devereux Women in Leadership
Award by The Main Line Chamber of Commerce.
Schick is a dedicated Yellow Jacket, and her generosity to her alma mater is inspiring.
In 2008 she and her husband Will (Class of 1984) created the William and Susan Schick
Leadership Scholarship, which is awarded to a junior or senior student who demonstrates
leadership. The Schicks previously served on the Parents Board of Directors, and
Sue is a former president of the Society of Alumni’s Board of Directors and a current
member of the Randolph-Macon Board of Trustees.
She is currently a member of the Heritage Society and the Presidents Society. At
the 2013 EDGE Boot
Camp, Schick shared her business savvy and leadership skills with R-MC students—a
true “moment of connection.” And this year,
she is the recipient of the Paradigm Award, the most prestigious award for
professional women in Philadelphia. She was presented the award on March 14.
The Schicks live in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and are the parents of three sons: George,
William and Andy, a member of the Class of 2013.
