Randolph-Macon College Dance Team recently competed in Richmond, Virginia at Cheer
and Dance Extreme’s Mid-Atlantic Premier Open Cheer and Dance Championship and came
away with a first-place victory.
In the collegiate dance categories, teams competed against a scoring standard to
earn their placement. High scores qualify teams to compete in Cheer and Dance Extreme’s
national championships as well as the U.S. Finals national championships. The first
competition is a championship to crown an overall winner from any competition that
Cheer and Dance Extreme hosts throughout the season. The U.S. Finals is the ultimate
in national championships and the finale that teams aspire to attend. The Yellow
Jacket Dance Team earned its way to both competitions.
“The R-MC community is so proud of our Dance Team,” says Susan Cassidy, who coaches
the team. Yellow Jacket dancers are: Dory Jackson ’16, Savannah
Kaiser ’15 (captain), Kathleen Lampe ’16, Lexie Tsantes
’17, Hannah Rogers ’17, Martika Williams ’16,
and Katharine Winters ’15 (captain).
Cassidy, in her 10th season with Randolph-Macon, is a former University of Pittsburgh
cheer captain with two National Cheerleading Association national championship titles.
She has more than 30 years’ experience in dance instruction, choreography and competition
at the local and national levels, and she also coaches the R-MC cheerleaders.
Team members will continue to prepare for the U.S. Finals, which takes place in
Virginia Beach May 4-5, 2014.
“It is at this competition last season that our dance team earned a nationwide ranking
of 5th amid all competing teams across the country,” says Cassidy.
