Alumnus Success: Benton Wislinski ’08
Alumnus Success: Benton Wislinski ’08
Benton Wislinski '08
Randolph-Macon College alumnus
Benton Wislinski ’08
is the founder and a principal of BGW Solutions, LLC. The Columbia, SC and Washington, DC firm manages marketing, campaigns, and government relations for clients. Wislinski’s R-MC education prepared him well for his challenging career.
“R-MC provides an incredibly well-rounded education,” says Wislinski. “At Randolph-Macon I learned how to think analytically and how to write cogently. These skills have directly translated to my professional success.”
An Honors student, Wislinski majored in
and minored in
. He took advantage of all that Randolph-Macon offers: He was a member of the
. He did a senior year
seminar and thesis, under the guidance of
Professor Denise Bissler. He got hands-on experience by participating in two
. And he took a January Term (
) trip to London, Paris, Berlin and Brussels in conjunction with
Professor Tom Badey’s
Major Governments of Western Europe
course. Students met with the Dean of Wroxton College, and they toured the House of Lords, Westminster Abbey, the British Supreme Court, the U.S. Embassy in France, the German Bundestag (parliament), and the United Nations headquarters.
“It was life-changing to experience firsthand how different governments function, and how they impact society and culture,” says Wislinski of the 17-day trip. “I’ll never forget being in Germany, while studying politics and government, and seeing the incredible impact our policy decisions have on society by standing at the torn down Berlin Wall—it was so striking.”
Wislinski, who earned his Master of Public Administration from The George Washington University, stays in close contact with his fellow Yellow Jackets.
“I keep in touch with many friends from my
, Theta Chi, and with members of the
team,” he says. “In the Washington, D.C. metro area, where I used to live and have several clients, there is a bevy of
who work nearby. Many of us have been able to help one another connect, find jobs or find clientele. I also stay in touch with a network of Yellow Jackets in South Carolina, where I live now.”
Wislinski speaks from experience as he shares his thoughts on the benefits of an R-MC education.
“At Randolph-Macon, students have the opportunity to benefit from a truly higher education,” he says. “
R-MC graduates are a step ahead
of other colleges’ graduates who haven’t faced an array of diverse coursework or been challenged to supersede their own goals. It’s great to be a Yellow Jacket.”
Paving the Way for Success
Rather than prepare students for one career, Randolph-Macon College prepares students for a lifetime of careers in an ever-changing world. Exceptional faculty work with students to cultivate their ability to think critically and analytically and to find creative solutions for solving problems. R-MC graduates are well-prepared for successful careers, often far outside of their areas of study.
and Alumni Network
, the cornerstone of the
Center for Personal and Career Development
, helps Randolph-Macon students lead the pack when competing for jobs and top graduate schools. Students have the support of faculty, career coaches, alumni and staff as they focus on their personal and academic ambitions.
Students may choose to pursue paid or volunteer internships in a wide variety of settings. The
Bassett Internship Program
has been successfully placing students in academic internships both in the U.S. and around the globe for 30 years. Coordinated with the Center for Personal and Career Development, the program helps students identify their interests and matches them with an appropriate internship opportunity. Randolph-Macon’s
provide a strong network of support for students throughout their time at the college or in assisting them after graduation with career direction and opportunities.
The Four-Year Degree Guarantee
Four-Year Degree Guarantee
guarantees in writing that freshmen who meet the Four-Year Degree Guarantee requirements will graduate within four calendar years. If not, Randolph-Macon will waive tuition costs for courses needed to complete the degree. Currently, 95 percent of R-MC graduates complete their degree in four years or less—an important value-added benefit for parents to consider when visiting colleges with their students.
Study Abroad programs
offer students a beyond-the-classroom global perspective and opportunities to immerse themselves in other cultures. Students can choose from a host of travel courses during January Term and semester-abroad programs.
The Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship (
) program gives students the opportunity to conduct 10 weeks of original research under the guidance of faculty mentors. Many students present their findings at national and international conferences.
