Hillmar is the author of Light Plot Deconstructed for Vectorworks Spotlight,
Vectorworks Spotlight is the industry standard Computer Assisted Design/Draft software
for entertainment industries such as theatre, dance, opera, concerts, and convention
design. Light Plot Deconstructed is an easy-to-follow guide that reflects
Hillmar’s drafting style and functions as a companion handbook to the software to
help readers draft light plots more easily.
“This edition addresses some of the new features in Vectorworks 2013,” explains
Hillmar. “There have been several improvements in both 2-dimensional drafting and
3-dimensional design modeling. Light Plot Deconstructed demonstrates how
I use these new features, and many old ones, to make choices as a lighting designer
and then properly draft those choices to share with others working on the production.”
Hillmar earned his B.A. in theatre from the University of Richmond and his M.F.A.
in theatrical design from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the R-MC
faculty in 2002 and teaches classes on theatrical design, stage managing and general

In addition to theatrical work, Hillmar designs for galleries and conventions, and
is an in-demand consultant and trainer in Vectorworks. He is a member of United
Scenic Artists Local 829, the union for professional theatrical designers.
