The Randolph-Macon College campus was abuzz on Friday, March 8, 2013 as a four-ton cupola was installed on Brock Commons, R-MC’s new student center. Web viewers watched it all happen via the Randolph-Macon College live
web cam.
The cupola sits on mounting bolts welded to steel, and a worker using a scissor lift tightened the bolts from the inside. The cupola was hoisted in separate parts as a crowd of students, faculty and staff watched. The finial was attached by a worker in an OSHA-approved "man-basket" suspended from a crane.
Scheduled for completion in spring 2013,
Brock Commons will include a movie theater, bookstore, dining services and café, balcony, portico with tables, student mailroom, and multi-purpose rooms.
Brock Commons, an ideal venue for student engagement and interaction, will also serve as a hub for organizations and campus events and activities.
Students can grab a cup of coffee, meet friends for a movie, buy books and other R-MC memorabilia, or work together on projects—all in the same place. Brock Commons is the latest addition to the campus in conjunction with R-MC’s Building Extraordinary capital campaign. The transformation on campus can also be monitored on the
R-MC On the Move web site.
Construction of Brock Commons is made possible by a $5 million gift from Joan and Macon F. Brock Jr. ’64 and by the generous support from numerous alumni and friends of the college.
