The Randolph-Macon College
Franklin Debating Society competed at the recent Collegiate Forensics Association’s Holiday Tournament, winning overall 1st Place in a tight competition with Florida. The team was led by a very strong performance by Hayley Williamson ’13. The tournament was held on the campus of Lord Fairfax Community College and drew competitors from 11 schools from New York to Florida.
In parliamentary debate, R-MC captured 2nd (
Crystal Thomas ’13 and
Hayley Williamson ’13), 4th (
Raymond Ruybe ’13 and
Matt Launderville ’13), and 6th (
Allison Tames ’13 and
Mikhaila Calice ’14) with an overall record of 13-7. Thomas was 4th best individual debater; Williamson was 5th.
In the limited-preparation events, R-MC took 1st (Williamson), 2nd (Thomas), and 4th (
Derek Dittmar ’16) in extemporaneous speaking and 1st (Williamson) and 2nd (Dittmar) in impromptu speaking.
In the platform-speaking events, R-MC took 5th (Thomas) in informative, 2nd in after-dinner (
Alex Burgess ’14), and 3rd (Thomas) and 5th (Launderville) in communication analysis.
In the interpretation events, R-MC took 1st (Williamson) and 6th (Tames) in poetry; 6th (
Natalie Clark ’15) in prose; and 3rd (Tames and Calice), 5th (Launderville and
Tim Johnson ’13), and 6th (Thomas and Williamson) in drama.
In pentathlon competition (five events, covering all categories), Williamson won 1st Place and Thomas won 3rd.
The Franklin Debating Society is coached by
English and
Communication Studies Professor Ted Sheckels and Communication Studies Professor John Mingus.
