Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs William T. Franz and his wife Patty recently donated $30,000 to support the construction of the
new science building and renovations to Copley Science Center. The new facility will be built in two phases. Phase 1 is a 27,000-square-foot, three-story building attached to the northwest side of the current Copley Science Center. The building will include state-of the-art teaching laboratories, classrooms, faculty offices and the Office of
Pre-Health Advising. The college has received a generous $5 million gift from Macon Brock ’64 and his wife Joan for this project. The Brocks are using their gift as a challenge to alumni and friends of the college to join them in this important endeavor. “Patty and I wanted to respond to the Brocks’ generous challenge and give something to the college that will benefit our students, staff and faculty for years to come,” says Franz, who donated $10,000 for each decade of his service to R-MC. “We can’t think of a better way to support the burgeoning interest in the sciences that is taking place at Randolph-Macon.” Franz, who also teaches
physics at R-MC, earned his B.S. from Muhlenberg College and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. His research interests include instrumentation, alternate energy sources, physics education and the physics of sports. He joined the faculty in 1983. Patty Franz is a supervising librarian for the Pamunkey Regional Library. “Bill and Patty’s gift is yet another tangible example of their dedication to Randolph-Macon,” says President Lindgren. “Their generosity serves not only to support our pressing priorities but also to demonstrate their belief in Randolph-Macon and its mission.”
