The
Randolph-Macon College Equestrian Team recently traveled to Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland for the first show of the 2012-2013 season. Four freshman and four seniors rode for the Yellow Jackets at the competition. Sixteen teams were represented at the show.
Catherine Bailey Sullivan ’13 was first in Advanced Walk/Trot /Canter.
Sydney Stevens ’16 took home the blue in Beginning Walk/Trot/Canter and
Kristin Kunz ’16 was third in her first ever Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) show.
Mary Margaret Petersen ’13 was second in Intermediate over fences and
Emily Watt ’13 was fourth in the Open Flat class.
“All in all, it was a great show,” says Dana Lesesne, the Equestrian Team coach. “R-MC finished 8th for the day, and we look forward to our next show on October 27, once again at Goucher College.” Lesesne spent her childhood, teen and college years competing in the sport of three-day eventing. She is a graduate “A” with the United States Pony Club, and she is actively competing her own young horse at horse trials in the Virginia area.
The Randolph-Macon College equestrian club and team welcomes riders of all levels who are interested in competing in hunt seat equitation (all IHSA Region 1 competitions are hunt seat equitation). The team trains at The Pines, which is located only three miles from campus. Lesesne encourages less-experienced riders to consider becoming part of the team.
“IHSA shows are fun and exciting, with competition at a range of levels from beginner (walk/trot) through experienced (open),” she says. “Because points are awarded equally for place finishes at all levels, this is truly a sport where every member can make a difference for the team.”
