“Randolph-Macon College has prepared me for the future by giving me
a solid liberal arts education that will be helpful in a number of fields and industries,” says
Colleen Hutchison ’12. “The emphasis on critical reading and analysis, writing, and communication will prove important wherever I work, and my experiences outside of the classroom have given me good leadership skills.”
Study Abroad
Hutchison is an
international studies major with minors in
Spanish and
ethics. In 2011 she spent a semester in Cordoba, Argentina. In addition to studying Spanish and Latin American history, politics, literature, and Argentine culture, she traveled throughout the country.
“It was the best four months of my life and I highly recommend
studying abroad for at least a semester,” she says. “I also completed a 2012
J-term internship with the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. I made great connections and learned a lot about nonprofit work while using my Spanish and knowledge of Latin American cultures to help Richmond's Hispanic community.”
Mentorship Hutchison credits
Political Science Professor Tom Badey and Spanish Professor Liliana Puppi-Redfern for helping her succeed at R-MC.
“Professor Badey is my advisor, and I have worked for him as a student assistant for four years,” says Hutchison. “He has been a great resource. Professor Puppi-Redfern is one of my favorite and most helpful professors. She cares so much about her students and I have relied on her as a mentor for the past four years.”
Future Plans The Mount Airy, Maryland native has participated in numerous community-service projects during her tenure at R-MC, and she plans on putting that experience to good use after graduation.
“I went on the Habitat for Humanity Alternative Spring Break trip to Fort Lauderdale in 2010, and this year I went on the Campus Ministries Council Alternative Spring Break trip to Washington, D.C. Both trips were very rewarding. I have also participated in Macon a Difference Day by painting houses and volunteering at the Richmond Food Bank. I plan to spend a year after graduation volunteering with AmeriCorps or a Catholic volunteer organization. After that I plan on working for the government, a nongovernmental organization or a nonprofit agency.”
