President Robert R. Lindgren recently announced that the Commencement speaker will be Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Yvonne W. Brandon ’76.
“Dr. Brandon is a wonderful inspiration for our students and we are pleased that she will serve as our Commencement speaker,” said Lindgren. “She was a student at Randolph-Macon during a time of historic transformation, when the college became co-educational. Brandon’s road to success is a shining example of the accomplishments possible with a liberal arts education.”
Brandon is the superintendent of Richmond Public Schools in Richmond, Virginia. The district serves more than 24,000 students in 29 elementary schools, nine middle schools and eight high schools. She previously served as interim superintendent before her appointment to lead the district in 2009.
She earned a degree in biology from R-MC in 1976, a master’s in guidance counseling from Virginia State University and an Ed.D. in educational supervision and administration from Nova Southeastern University. She began her distinguished career in Richmond Public Schools as a middle school math teacher. She also taught high school science, served as a guidance counselor, and led several schools as principal. In 1999, Brandon was appointed to her first administrative position as director of instruction for Richmond Public Schools, followed by her promotion to deputy superintendent in 2002.
Brandon has credited R-MC for teaching her critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. She said, “I cannot put a price tag on my academic and social experiences at Randolph-Macon.” Brandon has served on Randolph-Macon’s Board of Trustees since February 2011.
