A new staff-appreciation program is underway at Randolph-Macon College.
Yellow Jacket Awards will be given each year in March and November to staff who demonstrate excellence in one of three categories: Excellence in Service, Excellence as a Team Member, and Excellence Behind the Scenes. The first award ceremony took place on March 22, 2012 in Blackwell Auditorium, R-MC Center for the Performing Arts. President Robert R. Lindgren presented the awards. Just before the ceremony, staff enjoyed breakfast at the home of President and Mrs. Lindgren.

Excellence in Service Award is given to an employee who provides excellent service to students, staff, faculty, alumni and visitors. Two staff members received this award.
Debra Smith (housekeeping) has worked at the college for 12 years.
“Debra’s flexibility and easygoing and friendly manner have been a great match for any assignment she has taken on through the years,” said Lindgren as he presented the award. “Her most recent assignment has been Brown Campus Center…where she deals with retail sales, restaurant customers, student life and outside events. She is a true asset to Randolph-Macon College and we are fortunate to have such a dedicated and loyal staff member.”
Donna Curtis (advancement) has been a member of the Randolph-Macon Community since 2008.
Since that time, she has been responsible for coordinating the multiple mailings that have reached nearly all alumni, parents and friends of the college and that have resulted in increased levels of support for R-MC.
“Donna also manages the correspondence for the Class Agent volunteer fundraising program, reunions, and countless other annual giving appeals,” said Lindgren. “This task can be daunting… but Donna handles these complicated processes with precision, without complaint, and with a wonderfully positive attitude. She is a pillar of Randolph-Macon’s annual giving program.”
The
Excellence as a Team Member Award is given to an employee who exhibits outstanding teamwork and cooperation, both in his/her own department and with others.
Ed Gilkey ’72 (campus safety) joined the R-MC staff in 2008.
“Ed has been a source of inspiration for all of those who know him,” said Lindgren. “His pride and dedication to the college, the very place which enabled him to kick start a wonderful, fulfilling career, is evident in everything he does for our campus. And of course, Ed’s knowledge of the history of Randolph-Macon – and the stories he can tell of ‘the way things used to be’—are always a source of entertainment for his colleagues in Campus Safety.”
The
Excellence Behind the Scenes Award is given to a staff member who provides excellent service behind the scenes, showing initiative and drive and making Randolph-Macon a better place for work and study. Two staff members were presented this award.
Alice Cameron (
admissions) has worked at R-MC for 20 years.
“Alice has welcomed almost every prospective student who has visited our campus during the last two decades,” said Lindgren. “Her consistent warmth and charm always creates a positive first impression and sets a positive tone for the wonderful service that follows. She can just see the problems coming and helps to resolve them. Alice’s enthusiasm, humor and kindness are contagious, and all of those who interact with her are always better for the experience.”
Diana Lewis (provost’s office)
“Diane performs all of her duties with an incredible accuracy, professionalism, and efficiency,” said Lindgren. “But her work goes beyond what might be called ‘regular’ duties. She is the unofficial office-furniture-go-to person, outfitting faculty and staff offices with just the right touch. And it was Diana’s clever thinking that converted the pass-through hallway in Haley Hall into the Office of International Education’s ‘gateway to the world.’ She is a problem solver, a tireless worker, and an absolute treasure as a colleague.”
Lindgren also expressed his thanks to Staff Representative Annie Keith and Director of Human Resources Sharon Jackson for their leadership in organizing the awards presentation.
The second Yellow Jacket Awards presentation will take place in fall 2012.
