2/15/12Randolph-Macon College recently won the Virginia Program of the Year award for its Up Campus
Resident Assistant Educational Program, a sexual-education program. The award was presented at the Virginia Association of College and University Residence Halls (VACURH) conference, which took place February 10-12, 2012 at the University of Virginia.
R-MC Resident Assistants who planned the event were
Brittany Wright-Njie '12,
Arthur Kyner '14,
Ashley White '12,
Danielle Amegah '12, Brennan Smith '14 and
Hillary Sherbert '13. Mentor Resident Assistant
JoAnna Longo'12 assisted with the planning.
The award-winning sexual education program is a Hawaiian-themed program that includes information on sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs). Different-colored leis represent STD statistics. The program also includes information about the ovulation cycle and various birth control methods.
At the conference,
John Hollemon '13 presented the program to the state board.
“Winning the Program of the Year award is a huge achievement for our organization,” says Hollemon, a
communication studies major. “I knew we had a shot at winning, but I was a little intimidated by some of the bigger universities that were competing for the same award. When R-MC won, I was in complete shock. The award is a recognition piece for us, one that says we’re doing wonderful things, and it will give us a little ‘street cred’ at the next competition.”
Longo says she is proud of the RAs who planned the event and who encouraged residents to attend.
“This program was such as success because it was informative and fun,” says Longo. “I am glad we were given the opportunity to attend VACURH 2012 so that our staff can continue to learn and grow. It was a great opportunity to let R-MC shine.”
