Transformers and Monkey Kings: Gene Yang's American Born Chinese and the Quest for American Identity Sponsored by:
R-MC Student Honors Association Monday, November 14, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Andrews Hall Multipurpose Room
This talk will examine Gene Yang’s award-winning graphic novel
American Born Chinese (First Second, 2006) in the social and historical context of Chinese immigration to the United States. Yang’s
bildungsroman of a second-generation Chinese-American moving from San Francisco to the ethnically homogenous suburbs wittily embraces both the “model minority” stereotype of contemporary Asian-Americans, while also self-consciously harkening back to the buck-toothed, slant-eyed “Yellow Peril” trope of the 19th century. As such, the novel deftly encapsulates the ambiguity of the Asian-American immigrant experience in the twenty-first century: as implacably rooted in the racist past, but also embracing a contemporary, transnational sensibility that transcends “Chinese” or “American.”
Guest Lecturer: R-MC Asian Studies Professor Todd Munson (45-60 minutes)
