Randolph-Macon College was recently recognized as a finalist of the 2011 Prevention Excellence Awards during a ceremony held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The annual program, sponsored by Outside The Classroom, honors individuals, institutions, and Greek organizations that have achieved excellence in their alcohol prevention efforts, thus significantly improving the quality of student life.
"Educating students about the dangers of misusing alcohol and drugs is a top priority for us. We begin an aggressive prevention campaign from the moment students arrive on campus," says R-MC Dean of Students Grant Azdell. "This is a great recognition for our efforts."
R-MC's prevention program is led by Wendy Bauers Northup, coordinator of alcohol and other drug prevention (AOD). The AOD program strategies include:
• All new R-MC students are required to complete the on-line College Alc course prior to the start of New Student Orientation.
• R-MC’s Center for Counseling Services provides confidential education and counseling services to students regarding the harmful effects of abusing alcohol and other drugs.
• Sponsoring special speakers and informative sessions for Greek organizations and other student groups on campus.
• Having student leaders develop and lead special alcohol and drug prevention programs on campus.

An independent panel of national prevention experts selected R-MC as a finalist, along with four other institutions and two Greek organizations. All submitted applications were judged on the program's vision, innovation, and overall efforts around strategic planning.
"The Randolph-Macon College team's ability to develop, implement and sustain comprehensive alcohol prevention and education clearly demonstrates a commitment to creating a healthier, safer campus," says Outside The Classroom founder and CEO Brandon Busteed. "Most importantly, it is a testament to R-MC’s investment in creating optimal conditions in which students can learn."
