Chris Mereen '12 |
Randolph-Macon College student
Chris Mereen ’12, a
biology major, has been interested for many years in how the human body works. “As a kid, I had a lot of sports-related injuries,” he explains. “At least once a year I had an injury, and each time I made sure I took the proper steps to let the injury heal.”
The Charlottesville, Virginia native was drawn to R-MC because of its close-knit community and liberal arts curriculum. “I also wanted to be a part of Coach Hedrick’s
baseball program and his philosophy for success,” says Mereen, who has played three years for the Yellow Jackets.

“The game came naturally to me, and over the years baseball taught me how to deal with adversity. In order to succeed in baseball or in life, it is how you respond to failures that ultimately determines your success. I respect Coach Hedrick because he believes that success is a process. In order to achieve goals, you mustn’t lose sight of what is important along the way.”
In addition to spending time on the baseball field, Mereen is a member of R-MC’s Pre-health Society (part of the college's
Pre-med program), a student-run initiative that brings in medical professionals—including R-MC alumni—to talk to students about career opportunities. Students also meet with R-MC faculty, visit medical centers, and many participate in internships.
Mereen is also a brother of
Kappa Alpha Order, and he works as an athletic trainer’s assistant. “Working in the training room is a great experience,” he says, “because I am exposed to sports-related injuries and can observe methods of prevention and rehabilitation.”
After graduating from R-MC, Mereen plans on becoming a physician’s assistant. “I want to work in an orthopedic clinic,” he says. “I would like to be involved in a clinical setting where I can be involved in sports and continue to learn about health care.”
