Franklin Debating Society competed in an event sponsored by the Montreal Collegiate Forensic Association (CFA) January 21-22, 2011. R-MC placed third, the highest among the CFA schools in competition.
In parliamentary debate, the team of Crystal Thomas ’13 and Hayley Williamson ’13 and the team of Robert Thomas ’11 and Kat Bundy ’14 finished 3rd and 4th respectively. Robert Thomas and Hayley Williamson both won awards as individual debaters, placing 5th and 6th respectively. Williamson also won awards in communication analysis and impromptu speaking. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Ethan Franz ’12 won 2nd place. Franz also won awards in prose interpretation and impromptu speaking.
R-MC Professor Ted Sheckels, the A.G. Ingram Professor of English, coaches the R-MC Franklin Debating Society students. Sheckels is a
communication studies and
English professor and the director of speaking for the
Higgins Academic Center. He is assisted by part-time communication studies instructor John Mingus.
