Randolph-Macon College has elected three alumni to serve on its Board of Trustees. Haywood “HAP” Payne Jr. ’68, Yvonne W. Brandon ’76 and L. Preston Bryant Jr. ’86 will begin their terms during the Board’s February 2011 meeting.
R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren said, “These new Trustees will bring a level of expertise in areas that are crucial for the future of R-MC. They have earned career success in education, environmental protection, and research and technology. We are excited to welcome each of them to our Board of Trustees and thankful that they are so willing to dedicate their time and knowledge to help continue R-MC’s growth.”
Haywood A. “HAP” Payne Jr. ’68 is the retired president of ChevronTexaco Business and Real Estate Services. The unit is responsible for managing the energy company’s facilities, office strategies and property dispositions, and laboratory support; it also provides business services to Chevron’s operating companies throughout the world.
Payne earned a B.S. in
chemistry from Randolph-Macon College in 1968. He joined Gulf Oil Corporation in 1970 as a systems analysis chemist and remained with the company after it merged with Chevron in 1984. Throughout his career, Payne has held several management positions, including general manager of research services for Chevron Oil Research Co., general manager of technology support, and general manager and laboratory director for Chevron Petroleum Technology Co. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Management Institute, American Petroleum Institute, International Facility Management Association, and the National Technical Society.
Payne previously served on R-MC’s Board of Trustees from 1988 to 2000. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Pacific Symphony.
Yvonne W. Brandon ’76 is the superintendent of Richmond Public Schools in Richmond, Virginia. The district serves more than 24,000 students in 29 elementary schools, nine middle schools and eight high schools. She was previously tapped as interim superintendent before her appointment to lead the district in 2009.
Brandon earned a B.S. in
biology from Randolph-Macon College in 1976, a master’s in guidance counseling from Virginia State University and an Ed.D. in educational supervision and administration from Nova Southeastern University. She began her career in Richmond Public schools as a middle-school math teacher. She also taught high school science, served as a guidance counselor, and led several schools as principal. In 1999, Brandon was appointed to her first administrative position as director of instruction for Richmond Public Schools, followed by deputy superintendent in 2006.
L. Preston Bryant Jr. ’86 is a senior vice-president, infrastructure and economic development, at McGuireWoods Consulting in Richmond, Virginia. His expertise lies in water, wastewater and energy generation projects, and he advises clients on project site selection and regulatory affairs.
Previously, Bryant served as secretary of natural resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia under Governor Timothy M. Kaine. He led the state's six environmental, recreational, wildlife and historic resources agencies, which included a staff of 2,200 and a $420 million annual budget. He also helped write Virginia's first state-wide energy plan.
In 2008, President Obama appointed Bryant to chair the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), the central planning agency for all federal lands and buildings in Washington, D.C., suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. At NCPC he presides over a staff of 45 planners, architects, engineers and other professionals.
Bryant earned a B.A. in
English from Randolph-Macon College in 1986, a master’s in humanities from the University of Richmond, and a master’s in modern British literature from Royal Holloway College, University of London.
