The college plans to include a competitive equestrian team

Randolph-Macon College now offers an
Equestrian Club and has plans to elevate the program to include a competitive equestrian team by fall 2011.
“The college has applied for membership in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and we anticipate membership by January 2011,” says Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid David Lesesne, who serves as the faculty advisor for the club. “We have made arrangements with The Pines, a stable and training facility in Ashland, to provide our students lessons and practice and we anticipate hosting an IHSA event there in partnership with the University of Richmond Equestrian Club. Bruce Nachman, the trainer at The Pines, serves as the trainer for University of Richmond and is also serving as our trainer.” Lesesne’s wife Dana serves as coach for the
program.
Most of the IHSA competition will be in Hunter Seat Riding. “We have a number of currently enrolled students who are avid equestrians who ride in various disciplines—Hunter/Jumper, Eventing, Dressage, Western—and take advantage of the numerous riding facilities, trainers and boarding barns in our area,” says Lesesne. “Our hope is that our Equestrian Club will give these riders an organization to share their common interests and allow the college to help facilitate students’ connections with the tremendous equestrian resources we are blessed to have in our area.”
For some students, the new club will also offer the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level under the banner of Randolph-Macon. “Our intent is for this club to be open to all disciplines and not just limited to those that want to compete in the IHSA framework,” says Lesesne.
