2010 marks the 21st year that R-MC will present A Christmas Carol. |
A holiday tradition continues at Randolph-Macon College.
Ebenezer Scrooge will kick off the 21st production of R-MC
Communication Studies Professor Marilyn Mattys’ adaptation of
A Christmas Carol, directed by Joe Mattys, drama professor and chair of the R-MC Arts Department.
The production runs from Dec. 10-16, 2010:
December 10, 13-16: 7:30 p.m.
December 11 and 12: 2:00 p.m.
In keeping with tradition, cider and cookies will be served in the lobby after each show, and the audience can meet the cast.
R-MC’s
Drama Department hosted its first performance of
A Christmas Carol in 1990. At that time, the college theatre was located in Old Chapel, and the set consisted of simple black flats and floors with simple costumes. A small troupe of actors played numerous parts. “Since that time, the script has evolved slightly, adding characters here and there and simplifying others, and the sets and costumes have become more beautifully designed,” says Joe Mattys. “Yet, the story remains faithful and maintains the spirit and tone of the original.”
A Christmas Carol is not only a tradition at R-MC, but for local families who make this an annual holiday gathering. This year,
James Murray ’08, who in years past played Bob Crachit, will play the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Many of the cast members, including residents from the Town of Ashland, have grown up acting in different roles of the annual production.
Numerous actors will reprise roles, including Anthony Keitt, who has played Christmas Present every year since R-MC has done the show since 1992.
Bobby Thomas ’11 returns as Marley,
Becky Johnsen ’10 reprises Mrs. Cratchit and
Theresa Traylor ’05 returns as Belle. Ben Greennagle, Shannan Balance and Chace Blackburn, young actors from the community, have played various roles over the past several years and will once again grace the Cobb Theatre stage. Although most of the cast have done the show before and are reprising their roles this year, audiences will see some new faces on stage as well. “About a dozen new players are in the show this season,” says Mattys.
Tickets are $2.50 per person for adults, $1.00 for children 12 and younger, free to R-MC faculty, staff and students. For information on tickets and reservations, call the R-MC Box Office at (804) 752-7316.
