Novelist Valerie Sayers |
On Thursday, October 21, 2010, Randolph-Macon College will host award-winning novelist Valerie Sayers, who will present “The Distance a Writer Travels.” The talk will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the Washington Room of Washington and Franklin Hall.
This event is free and open to the public. Sayers will discuss both the writing process and the process of becoming a writer. As a Beaufort, South Carolina native whose writing career has taken her around the country, Sayers’s reflections on the geographical and philosophical distances a writer travels will connect with aspiring writers and readers alike.
She is the author of five novels:
Who Do You Love and
Brain Fever, both named “Notable Books of the Year” by the New York Times Book Review;
The Distance Between Us; and
Due East and
How I Got Him Back, which became the basis for the film Due East. Her literary awards include a Pushcart Prize for fiction and a National Endowment for the Arts literature fellowship. A professor of English at the University of Notre Dome, she publishes stories, essays and reviews widely. Her new novel, The Powers, is forthcoming in fall 2011.
The lecture is presented in conjunction with the Washington Literary Society and
The Stylus, Randolph-Macon College’s Journal of Creative Writing. Sayers’s appearance is one of a number of special events planned to celebrate
The Stylus during the 2010-2011 academic year.
