Claiborne G. Thomasson ’63 was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by R-MC’s Society of Alumni at the October 1, 2010 “Macon Connections” event at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia. The award was presented by Robert Lambeth ’71.
The Society of Alumni created the Distinguished Alumnus Award to honor those alumni who have achieved wide recognition through contributions made to society through their chosen professions.
Claiborne Thomasson earned his degree in English in 1963 from Randolph-Macon where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order.
After graduation, Thomasson served in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1969 as a decorated officer and fighter pilot serving two combat tours in Vietnam. On April 10, 1968, while flying an A-1 H Skyraider, he was shot down by enemy ground fire.
After his military service, Thomasson became an investment banker with Craigie Incorporated and attended the New York Institute of Finance. During the next 18 years, he worked with Bank of Virginia, Signet, First & Merchants, and Sovran, rising to senior vice president and manager of the Municipal and Government Bond Investment department. From 1989 to 1991, he served as senior vice president of Municipal Finance with Wachovia Bank in Richmond.
After his career in banking, Thomasson founded Diversified Restaurant Management, Inc., in 1998. The company owns Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Richmond and Virginia Beach.
Randolph-Macon is grateful to Thomasson for his generous support of the College. He is a member of the Board of Associates, the Presidents Society and the Heritage Society. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Virginia based in Richmond.
Thomasson lives in Richmond and is the father of two daughters, Robin and Megan. He is a member of the Bon Air United Methodist Church.
