R-MC Hosts “The Pope’s Rhinoceros”

Randolph-Macon College will host a lecture by mathematician Steve Seubert on Thursday, October 7, 2010. Seubert will present “The Pope’s Rhinoceros” at 7:00 p.m. in the Copley Science Center, Room 100. This event is free and open to the public.

Seubert will discuss the role played by mathematics during the Age of Exploration and share historical stories of navigation, including how the Portuguese effectively gained access to important Roman Catholic maps by bribing the Pope with a rhinoceros.

Seubert is a professor of mathematics at Bowling Green State University of Ohio and has given numerous presentations at every level of mathematics.
