Benjamin Ray |
Randolph-Macon College will host guest lecturer Benjamin Ray on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Ray will present “The Girls Who Cried Witch: Discovering Why Salem Happened,” at 7:00 p.m. in the Topping Room of Old Chapel. This lecture is the first of a five-part women’s history series titled “Edgy Women.”
This event is free and open to the public. Ray will discuss the often overlooked girls who were the key to the accusations of witchcraft in Salem. Can we dismiss them simply as hysterical girls who faked their “afflictions?” Or can we take a more complicated view of them as genuinely disturbed?
Ray is a professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia where he teaches a popular course on the Salem Witch Trials.
This lecture is sponsored by the Committee on Assemblies and Special Events (CASE) and
R-MC’s honors program,
First-Year Experience program, and departments of
history, art history,
sociology,
women’s studies and
political science.
