Mutluluk (Turkey, 2007)
Directed by Abdullah Oguz
When Meryem is found unconscious by the side of a lake in the countryside, her family believes the worst — that her chastity has been lost. They turn to the ancient principle of "tore," a strict moral code that condemns Meryem to death. The duty of upholding the family's honor falls upon a distant cousin, Cemal, who has just completed a brutal tour in the military. Together they embark on a surprising journey across traditional and modern-day Turkey. Based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Zülfü Livanelli. 105 minutes. (Rain location: Crenshaw Alumni Gym)
Saturday, Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m.
Love in Another Language –
Başka Dilde Aşk (Turkey, 2009)
Directed by Ilksen Başarır
Başarır’s award-winning debut film invites us to the world of the deaf through its plain but exciting depiction of the romance between Onur, a deaf man who works as a librarian and Zeynep, a call-center employee. The film shows the difficulties the couple encounters both in their relationship with one another and the outside world. On a more universal level, how-ever, the film points to the lack of communication within our contemporary world. 98 minutes. (Rain location: Blackwell Auditorium)
The film series is sponsored by the Committee on Assemblies and Special Events (CASE) and R-MC’s modern languages departments.
