The Class of 2014 is the most diverse freshman class in the history of Randolph-Macon College. The 344 freshmen represent 17 states plus the District of Columbia and the countries of Canada, Vietnam, Turkey and China. In addition, 27% of the class represents an ethnic minority group, up from 20% in 2009. Thirty new students are also transferring to the college. The college’s total enrollment for 2010 is 1,224.
“This is exciting news for us and a tremendous way to begin a new academic year,” said R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren. “This underscores that our message about the value and affordability of Randolph-Macon’s nationally-recognized liberal arts education is being heard.”
This is the fifth consecutive year that R-MC received a record number of applications, which also resulted in the one of the largest entering freshman classes in R-MC history. The 2010 applicant pool rose to a record-breaking 4,658 prospective students.
Accepted students for the 2010-2011 academic year include 61 National Honor Society members, three high school class presidents, five Eagle Scouts and one Gold Award recipient.
Here is a sampling of some of the students entering R-MC:
Anna Smither participated on the U.S.A. National Deaf Women’s Soccer Team, which won a gold medal in The 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei, Taiwan. She has been recruited to play soccer at R-MC.
Goksan Gungordu graduated from Red Cross Nordic United World College. He is R-MC’s second recruit from the prestigious Davis United World College Scholars Program, which provides scholarships to students from around the world to attend American colleges and universities. R-MC is one of only four Virginia colleges to become a member of the Davis Scholars program.
Alexandria “Alex” Gavin was a contestant on The Price Is Right this summer and wore her R-MC
t-shirt on national TV. Game show host Drew Carey asked her where R-MC is located.
Cecelia Quinonez graduated as valedictorian of Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, where she was captain of her basketball team. She plans to be a pre-med student at R-MC.
Randolph-Macon is offering an excellent series of First-Year Experience programs for the upcoming academic year, 19 Study/Travel Courses in January Term 2011, national and international internships and a wide range of research opportunities through its Schapiro Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program.
“Our exceptional faculty and academic programs continue to gain national and international recognition,” said Lindgren, “and we are thrilled to witness this incredible interest in attending Randolph-Macon College.”
