Randolph-Macon College Director of Disability Support Services Jack Trammell delivered a paper on July 21, 2010 at the 7th International Conference on Disability in Higher Education in Innsbruck, Austria. The conference, hosted at Innsbruck University, was sponsored in part by AHEAD (the Association for Higher Education and Disability), for which Trammell currently serves as Virginia president elect.

Method in the Madness: The Freshmen Mental Health Project (FMHP) and a Foucauldian Governmentality of the Mind, focused on the first two years of a Randolph-Macon College initiative to aid incoming freshmen with mental-health-related disabilities, and the need to foster a disability-friendly environment on college and university campuses. Much of Trammell’s ongoing research focuses on how to best accommodate college students with disabilities, and when possible, how to eliminate or control disability stigma.
As a result of the conference, Trammell has been asked to publish the delivered paper in the conference proceedings, and to publish additional related articles and book chapters in the U.K., Poland and possibly in Japan. “Several colleagues overseas are also interested in visiting R-MC as a result of the conference,” says Trammell. “That’s very exciting because there is a global movement underway to enhance accessibility, and R-MC is an active participant.”
In addition, Trammell visited the Innsbruck University campus and met their disability director, Dr. Rieder, as well as local city and province officials supporting the conference, which is held every three years in Innsbruck. This was Trammell’s second time to attend the conference.
In addition to his work as the director of disability support services in R-MC’s Higgins Academic Center, Trammell also works with Honors students in the Honors Program and teaches part-time in the sociology department at the college.
Trammell joined the faculty at Randolph-Macon in 2000. He earned his M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University.
