Randolph-Macon College was host to 160 students from the A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday, July 21, 2010. R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren joined fellow Greater Richmond Chamber members in welcoming the students. Members of the Chamber first learned about the school during an intercity visit to Raleigh last spring.

In his welcome to the students, President Lindgren said, “You are off to a great start already and a college education will prepare you well for anything you want to do in life. Your great program is the perfect example of how we can develop the next generation of leaders and create an educational program that we truly can be proud of.”
Greater Richmond Chamber members are very impressed with the leadership magnet school and are exploring the creation of a similar program in the Metro Richmond area. The academic curriculum at A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School is based on 21st Century leadership development and character development based on the principles of Dr. Stephen Covey’s book,
7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The program’s primary focus is on personal and academic goal setting, individual initiative and responsibility, and participation in service learning. The school’s motto is “Do the Right Thing, Even When No One is Watching.”
Greater Richmond Chamber members who attended the visit included Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon ’76, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College President Dr. Gary Rhodes and Greater Richmond Chamber President Kim Scheeler.
