Professor Brenda Davis |
Randolph-Macon College Education Professor Brenda Davis has received a Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC)/Verizon grant. The grant will be used in part to fund a workshop for 20 Hanover-area educators. The workshop, which will be held in R-MC’s McGraw-Page Library on Friday, August 6, 2010, will focus on Thinkfinity.org, a Web site developed and supported by the Verizon Foundation.
“The site focuses on K-12 (kindergarten through 12th grade) content in language arts, social studies, science and math with resources for students, teachers and parents,” says Davis. “The selected teacher participants will learn about Thinkfinity.org in an interactive and hands-on workshop. At the conclusion of the six-hour training, participants will be endorsed as field-based trainers for the site.”
The workshop participants will also be able to host R-MC pre-service teachers in their classrooms. In turn, those pre-service teachers will be introduced to Thinkfinity in Education classes and use Thinkfinity.org resources to teach K-12 students.
VFIC Vice-president Mary-Beth Johnson and Verizon representative Steve Clementi will also be attending the workshop.
Davis collaborated with R-MC’s Lily Zhang, director of instructional technology, Higgins Academic Center, and head of media and instructional support, McGraw-Page Library, in applying for the VFIC/Verizon grant.
Davis, who joined the R-MC faculty in 1985, earned her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Richmond and her Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University. She serves as the chair of the education department at Randolph-Macon College.
