R-MC Professor to Serve as Vice Mayor of Ashland

Randolph-Macon College Physics Professor George Spagna has been elected to serve as vice mayor of Ashland, Virginia. His two-year term will last through June 2012.
 
“I am honored to serve the people of Ashland, and grateful for the confidence my fellow council members have shown by electing me as their vice mayor,” says Spagna. “I look forward to working with the Mayor and Council in this new role.”

Spagna is currently serving his second term on the Ashland Town Council; he was elected in 2004 and then re-elected in 2008.

“The Town Council sets tax rates, adopts a budget, approves or disapproves of zoning changes, and enacts such ordinances as are needed to do all of the above,” says Spagna. “We also appoint and oversee a Town Manager, who has administrative control of the Town’s operations.”

Spagna has served at various times during the last six years as Council Liaison to the Economic Development Authority, the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Planning Commission, and to Market Ashland Partnerships. His newest liaison assignments are to the Planning Commission (which is currently revising the Comprehensive Plan), the Board of Zoning Appeals, and the Town-County Liaison Committee, which consists of elected officials and staff from both Ashland and Hanover County. Spagna will serve alongside Ashland Mayor Faye Prichard.

Spagna joined the faculty at R-MC in 1986. He earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
