Gene Glave |
On Sunday, March 14, 2010, R-MC will host a special presentation of “The Mammalogues,” starring Virginia native Gene Glave. The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. in Blackwell Auditorium, R-MC Center for Performing Arts. Tickets for the event cost $10 each (free to R-MC students with valid ID).

Diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago, Glave used her writing and acting skills, which she discovered while living in Ashland, to create this one-woman show. The show has been extremely well-received by audiences. In 2008 Glave was also named Health Care Hero by the Charleston Regional Business Journal for bringing awareness to breast cancer.
Glave is currently a registered nurse and pediatric services manager for Roper Saint Francis Healthcare in Charleston, South Carolina. While living in Ashland, she was active with the Ashland Junior Woman’s Club’s effort to bring live theatre to children. She wrote Buttercups and Dandelions, one of the Huckleberry Players shows, which was filmed and then distributed nationwide. In Charleston, Glave graduated to performing in theatre for all ages, acting in such diverse roles as Ouiser in Steel Magnolias and a cancer patient in Collected Stories.
Glave has performed “The Mammalogues” at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina and has upcoming appearances slated for Amelia Island, Florida and Nashville, Tennessee. She is active with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, heading the Advocacy Alliance committee for the lowcountry affiliate in South Carolina. She is also an elder at her church, Sunrise Presbyterian on Sullivans Island.
This inspirational and entertaining event is presented in conjunction with Women’s History Month and is sponsored by the Office of Student Life. Ashland residents Betty Carol Stevenson and Shearer Luck, along with R-MC Director of Student Life Shalise Bates-Pratt, helped coordinate this event.
