Randolph-Macon College won the 11th Annual intercollegiate Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation Ethics Bowl debate competition held February 14-15, 2010 at the University of Richmond.
A program of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC), the Bowl featured a theme of
Ethics & Education and involved student teams from 15 private colleges and universities in Virginia debating case studies with ethical dilemmas within the topic of education. The teams presented their analysis, positions and recommendations to panels of judges comprised of business, professional and educational leaders drawn from throughout Virginia.
The R-MC winning team consisted of Becky Johnsen ’10, John Schmeelk ’10, Crystal Thomas ’13 and Robert Thomas ’10, who defeated teams from Mary Baldwin College, Virginia Wesleyan College, University of Richmond and the Exhibition Team (University of Richmond #2) before triumphing over previously undefeated Hampden-Sydney in the final round.
In congratulating the victorious students, R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren said, “I join the rest of the Randolph-Macon College community in congratulating this terrific team and in thanking their coaches, Professors Edward Showalter and David Brat, for their dedication and support, as well as our overall debate steward, Professor Ted Sheckels.”
